چکیده

T his issue of the Journal marks the fiftieth anniversary of the paper where Keith Porter, Albert Claude, and Ernest FuUam published the first electron micrograph of a complete cell (1). The cell was a fibroblast grown in tissue culture from the foregut of a chick embryo. The March 1945 article in which this micrograph appears, "A Study of Tissue Culture Cells by Electron Microscopy" opened the world of the cell for discovery. In the authors' own words, their paper demonstrates that

Electron Microscopy of Structural Detail in Frozen Biological Specimens

A procedure is described whereby preshadowed replicas can be obtained from frozen biological specimens which have been cut and then etched by sublimation of the ice from their surfaces. Electron micrographs showing details of the internal structure of plant virus crystals are presented to demonstrate the values of the procedure. Crystals of purified tobacco ringspot virus and squash mosaic viru...

Identification of Viruses Affecting Gladiolus in Kyiv Region

Introduction. The Gladiolus genus belongs to the Iridaceae Juss family. It includes more then 150 species. Most of them are native to Africa and few originated from the Mediterranean area, Asia and South Europe. Cultivars of gladiolus exhibit a great diversity of colour, size, shape, flowering time, and bulbing and dormancy behaviour [2]. Gladiolus is an important ornamental plant grown for com...

Energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy of biological samples on highly transparent carbon nanomembranes.

Ultrathin carbon nanomembranes (CNM) comprising crosslinked biphenyl precursors have been tested as support films for energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy (EFTEM) of biological specimens. Due to their high transparency CNM are ideal substrates for electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and electron spectroscopic imaging (ESI) of stained and unstained biological samples. Virtually ...

Expanding our Understanding of the Seaweed Holobiont: RNA Viruses of the Red Alga Delisea pulchra

Marine seaweeds are holobionts comprised of the macroalgal hosts and their associated microbiota. While the composition of the bacterial component of seaweed microbiomes is increasingly studied, almost nothing is known about the presence, diversity and composition of viruses in macroalgae in situ. In this study, we characterize for the first time the viruses associated with a red macroalga, Del...

Comparing Invasive and Non-Invasive of Isolated Shigella flexneri by Electron Microscopy of Cell Culture, SDS-PAGE and Congo Red Method

The aim of this study was to compare invasive and non-invasive strains of Shigella flexneri isolated from Tehran by a 120 kDa protein band by SDS-PAGE, electron microscopy of cell culture and Congo red dye methods. Methods: S. flexneri strains were isolated by standard bacterial methods from fecal specimens of children attending to the 3 children’s hospitals. Phenotype analysis for screening v...
